Screens make me mad

I think they do. Me and everyone else. I don't know why.

Tonight I was reading Rachel blog, and it got me thinking about this post I have wanted to write for a while, so here is it.

When my little boy was 3 years old he was all screen free, I did not use the computer when he was awake and he did not watch tv, or movies.

And then I introduced him to the world of movies, I thought it was not big deal, not open or cable tv, just a few selected movies, innocent stories. But then his peaceful behavior start to change. After a while he spend a few days without screen time, about a week, and I start to see signs of his old personality, and so I wonder and start to do tests. I saw that every time he had screen time he will become unpleasant to be with, not following directions, screaming, being rude to me, etc. There was anger behind all that, I could see it. And from that time I have try to not to expose my child to tv, movies, cell phone games, and even computer time, noticing the same effects and but even when we don't have a tv he gets to watch it in other places and sometimes I agree on a movie on the computer, always feeling that damage is happening and maybe it won't be a way to fix it.

At the same time I have been paying attention on what effect it has on me, because I want to be at my computer, you know, bogging, reading, keeping my bussines, but I know that I don't keep it at minimum, sometimes I'm on line just to see if someones connect too and we can talk, and this is stealing time an energy from my life, my real life with my boy, but, on top of all that, it makes me mad too. If my ask my attention in the middle of writing an email I get mad and answer in a not so polite way, and everything delays, yes he is not a baby any more, but getting his pijama's on is faster if I'm just sitting next to him than in the other room asking ud if he is done it already. It makes me mad and it's addictive, and many times there is nothing important there.

And so, I try to stay away too, to reduce my srceen time.

I just wanted to share I finished the skull sweater, but then Y ha to make ti longer and nw I´m redoing the hod because it did't fit him well.

So we had a very nice one today, and I decide to let go, and don't stay awake until midnight the night before finishing his gifts and better sleep with him, so I gave him some unfinished stuff, but he liked it.

Here is his skeellie, wich I called Catrino and he called Lindo Bombón. he has a shirt, pants, a dress, a blanket and a bed in process. I got the fabric from here. And I wrote the blanket pattern here, even when this is not really a pattern I thought it may be useful for someone

A ride to the hospital

So we finished our Holiday with a ride to the hospital, not a rush preoccupied one, just concern.

We went to a family party in the country and almost as soon as we arrived my son fell (he was wearing his brand new orthopedic shoes) and he hurt his ankle, he cried but not much, and then it was fine, but he could not stand or walk. We stayed at the party for several hours and he played on the grass.

When we left I decide to take him to the Hospital because he wont stand yet, and trying was painful.

We got lucky and there was no broken bones, but I got a bittersweet taste for all of it, and the funny thing is not that I was a little worry for him (I manage to get calm thinking the worst scenario, which I thought was a broken bone and a cast, and still that was not so ban, because there was no needles or painful procedures involved), it was the bad vibes I got since the beginning.

Do you have an unsporting person in your life? I think I involuntary always keep one on hand, because that my role model. So if I don't get disaprovement I'm not at peace. But I'm trying to change that.

Since I arrive to the place the comment of this person was that I had choose the wrong socks for those shoes, and then when he felt, that of course that was my fault for make him wear those shoes on grass, not to mention that I'm almost hypochondriac for taking him to the hospital.

And I think... so what?

If I'm exaggerating by taking him to the the hospital, then be supportive or don't be any way. I managed to make my kid get exited to wear those shoes, I mean, those ugly, heavy, Herman Monster shoes, that are good for him, he has the worst kind of flat feet, I'm trying to avoid a surgery, here, is that so bad?

I'm sorry if all this does not make any sense, but what do you do when someone you can't really cut from your kid's life is so negative about all the decisions you make?

Is anyone dealing with something similar?

I'm sorry, for all this, thank you for reading, tough, and for the record my kid will be fine and he was excited for the wheelchair.

Stealing hours to the night I was able to made this for my son that he wanted as a Christmas gift.

It comes with a Halloween costume, which I did, but I also wanted to do somthing different, so I made this outfit that is almost done, still needs buttons.You could make it your self by getting th fabric here.

For the ladies of the knitting group I made stokings for the babies, wiht their names embrodiered.

Are you all rushing making Christmas gifts? I am. And at the same time I have lots of granola to make. I'm very happy with the new packing, which is compostable.

We made this apron for an aunt, and my son wrote his name, which is a new skill.

I have decorate and put togheter lots of gift boxes.

I also made this Christmas stocking for the babies of my knitting group ladies.

I'm still on the Pirate Sweater for my son, as he called it. It was much more easy than I thought but I did have to make adjustments because my yarn is thinner, I will update details here soon.

I'm still on One hundred years too, and happily surprised of how many English speakers have reed it, it's such a great book, I'm in the part of 17 Aurelianos already.

Last night I watch Le Concert, it was great, I even watched over imediatly, as I did with Garden State.

My son is in need of a warm sweater for winter, so I let him pick a pattern, he liked this one for the pirate related thing with the skull, I like it because it has a hoodie, it's a free pattern, and it seams like is wide and can last a year, or at least I'm hoping that, this is the larger project I have ever made, I don't have black wool yarn so I will be using brown instead, details here.

I'm rereading One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, I recommend it very much, it's incredible.

Is that time of the year

I've been planing since the last week of October, it gave me so much joy to arrange an rearrange the gift list, lo think of the best ideas, what will be the best gift for each one and also to make things to sell in this season, so I wont get any sleep until the last day of December.

I switch to sewing mode, so I'm not knitting that much and I think this year will be the year of the banners, I made one and I'm all hooked, love them, hope to sell some too.

This first one is for a lady who sells her pottery work at the farmer's market I work, I love her creations, and the colors she use, always on the blue green side. She made a mug for my son's the other day, just because, and I love it, so I wanted to thank her, and created this flag banner with the same colors, hope she likes it.

Here is another one I'm working on, it will say Buenas Noches (Good Night), I love to do things inspired by trees.

I made one pant holder for a friend in Mexico we called Lu out of demin scraps, pants are always too long for me, alas the mane of my blog.

And I love it so much that now I can't stop, I made this one for sell and this other one for my brother as a Christmas gift, this last one comes with a little pouch that can be attached to the bike.

I also made this little wallet for a friend. I love to create things, I just feel a little sorry that I'm so busy doing things for sell that I hardly have time for doing things for love ones, because I'm getting so many ideas.

But tomorrow is my father birthday, so I made this apron for my son to embellish and I love that the first thing he thought was to put a heart on it. And then he (with my help) wrote "for my grandchild". since they are always joking around about my son being the grandfather and my father being the grandson.

We don't have a t.v. at home but I do let my son play in some sites I found safe.

So I had created this site, so he can explore and add information as he learns it and along with his own interests.

It is Spanish, but he does not read yet, so I try to design it for any kid.

It's Veikko's hat a very simple gnomy hat that I made for a Finn friend’s baby, Veikko. It’s a fast and easy last minute gift, also it needs very little yarn, so you can use whatever you have on your stash. I used some leftover from Restless Prairie Farm, an Etsy shop, I don’t know the brand of it but it’s organic and so soft.

A great Sunday

Yesterday my brothers (soul bothers), came for breakfast and end up staying almost all day, it was so much fun, we love them.
We cooked, played and made music.

Thank you both we are so lucky to have you.

We also had Danish Baby that I got from an SouleMama tweet that took me to Amy from Angry Chicken it's such a good thing to eat with jelly or cheese and so easy, I recommend it.

These days :: sewing and baking

I have been sewing a lot and also baking some. And I took the pictures necessary to make some tutorials to come in the next weeks.

There is this bracelet that my son made (he sews the button) as a gift, a great choice for little ones gifts, I think.

There is also this little wallet.

A car bag for kids stuff.

Boys pants.

And the play mat, all very simple projects to complete in 1-2 hours, great for last minute holiday gifts.

On the baking front there is this pumpkin flan and this banana super healthy mini cakes.

This week I'm still on the sleepers for my son, from last week, and a pair of baby sock for a surprise gift.

The yarn on the sleepers it's quite old, my mom gave it to me about 3 years ago, but I remember how it was always in her stash, so I showed to her and we calculated it's about 20 years old. And the good news is that is not acrylic, but wool, she made a little burning test (I didn't knew about this), and showed me how it will became ashes and not a hard plastic thing and there is also the smell of burned hair.

In the reading front there has been a lot of Calvert manuals being our first year and all the system very new for me, so I'm trying to figure it out, but today we had our fist lesson and we loved it, more on that tomorrow.

These days on the garden

Yes, more about my garden, even when it's a little abandoned and some things were eaten by slugs and ants, there is still thing blooming and that it's just magic for me.
Here you can see some lavender, a big pumpkin, something I don't know what it is but I liked those lilac flowers, a nice butterfly who enjoy the compost pile and my sunflower, have you notice how tall it is?, and I didn't knew it will have more than one flower, I'm already savoring those seeds.

There is also som fava and garabanzo beans still growing.

What about you, there anything still growing in your backyard?

The simplest pillowcase

I'm with the aim of the tutorials again, I thought that a pillow can be simple and fast for a gift or home.

The pillow I made only with two squares of fabric and filling with cotton waste, it can be made in any size, or maybe you already have one and I will explain is how to make a pillowcase that can brighten our home.

This week I was active on knitting but not in the reading front after have finished Freedom, which I loved, but still can't tell exactly why.

I made a pair of sock and mittens with an Alpaca skein I have had for about 3 years, but I don't have the label any more, so I don't know how much alpaca is on it and if there is any other fiber, but the textures is great and I love the color too. And is so cute to make little things, I hope to post the pattern, which is my own, some day soon.

I had also some old yarn my mom's gave me, it's clearly acrylic, but still, my son needed some sleepers and I already had the soles from 2 years ago, I'm lucky they still fit him, and have a little space to grow into, he loved it, now I just need to make the pair. He loved them, and I feel so good to be able to do something for him among all the work.

Pretty little bags (freebies)

Tho other I ordered a pretty fabric with Matrioskas, Japanese, decorator's weight fabric, lovely. But when it arrived I found out that it had American flags on it, and so I could not think of a proper project for it, as I'm not American myself.

But then I got a couple of orders from my Etsy shop and I got an idea, since my buyers are mostly from there.

I have mention before how much I love freebies, to receive then and give them, so I made a bunch to go along with orders.

I love them, they close with hook and loop and are kind of addictive, I can't wait to make more!

Indigenous Textile workshop for kids

We had a workshop at my son's kinder yesterday. It was inspired by a very significant trip we had before leaving Mexico, we went to Oaxaca were we visit museums and just hang around the beautiful city together as a family, it was a good bye to Mexico.

I have always be passionate about Indigenous textiles and so, inspired by all this and they day of the Cultures here in Costa Rica, I design a workshop to show kids about natural fibers, weaving and then they will make their own Huipil, using stamps to decorate, I enjoyed very much, because I love working with kids. My son was my little helper, and it was very nice to see how they all work, too bad I forgot the camera and only had the cell phone one, but the other pictures are from the trip to Oaxaca and I think they are very pretty.

I also bring lots of huipiles for them to see, try them on and feel, most of them embroidered.

I love how this very young girl worked, focus and happy.

This one is by a kid that sings while working, and there is a whole story here, there is a squirrel party, the line is the stair, and there are cakes. Then, on the other side he made that yellow figure, which is the bathroom, that makes complete sense to me, that is needed in a party.

I end up my leg warmers here are my notes in Ravelry, I love the yarn, they live in my legs, I'm wearing them all nights.

I'm still on the same book, getting to close to the end, which makes me both: not wanting it to be finish, but so excited to be close that more than ever I just can't put it down.

I started some baby socks with my own strange pattern, I'm not sure about the yarn, except that I love it and is natural (maybe even 100%), since the label it's gone, but I think it has alpaca on it.

What about you?, I have been working no stop at my bussiness blog, the Milpa site and the Etsy store, so tired, but satisfied.

Homescholing, we are going with Calvert

We are so excited about this.

Yesterday we got access to our internet accounts and my son was really happy exploring the activities on line.

We choose Calvert for the ATS, because I don't know how to get a Certificate of Compliance in any other way since we are not U. S. citizens or live there. There is no options for accredited homescholing in Mexico or Costa Rica, so will try this year and see how it works, even when I meant to follow a child oriented education I'm still pretty excited about getting the box with all the material to work.

Here you can see the material por pre-K and K from the Calvert website. I will have to do a lot of translating (we speak Spanish), but I think it will work and I plan to teach him English as we go.

It's really hard to be a pioneer on things, I now that maybe not all extended family are supportive of this choice, but in our countries it's much unusual and weird, so people will confront me and had try to change my mind, still, I'm sure this is the best for my boy and for us as a family, plus we have tons of fun doing it.

Therewas othet options I consider, A Beka, K12, and Epysteme, wich is in Spanish, but I think Calvert will work better for us, we will see.

I have almost made no progress on the vest, I have some kind of block, but I'm reading a lot, I got the Indiespensble box of wonder from Powell's a few months ago, and the first one I loved (The particular sadness of lemon cake), and the next I had not touched until last week when I got into Feedom, by Jonathan Franzer, and I just can put it down, I recommend it a lot.

The Rhythm of our home, or the lack of it

I like to read Nicole's blog, Frontier Dreams, and when she suggested we all write about this subject I was all excited, thinking about all the things I had to say about it. And then nothing. Because the most I wanted to say something about it, the more I felt so bad about it. The thing is that I feel our life it's just so stressful and crazy that I feel really guilty, except..., well except for the days when I allow him to stay home and skip school, those are our favorite days. And I also feel I have to hide that from everyone, or I'll be criticized and the Government will try to take my kid away from me (in this country is completely against the law to homeschool). And then I will make him go back to school, and he will be okay after that and seams happy.

But last week he get off 3 days in a row, and funny things start to happen. The first day we just play (and I felt a little guilty, but how can that be bad for a 5 year old, or any kid?), the second day he went to his art wall and decide he wanted to do all, cut, write, draw, glue, and so we did, and he didn't need me to be there at all times, just help him a little, explain the task and then leave him to do it. At night he didn't wanted to go to bed before finishing his whole book on pencil practice.

Finally, on Thursday, after art class, the teacher was amaze at how well he had worked and how focused and calm he was, and asked if any had happened, I explain her and we both look at each other with significant stares. His art that day was great, in performance and concept.

So I'm finally getting brave enough to do it, I just order our Calvert program (so we can get certificate of compliance in case legal problems arise), and I'm picking up any bit of strength in my body to stand up for our choice when all the critics will arrive (and they will), but I'm sure now, I can see clearly and know everything will be all right. And I can spoke away the Ritalin ghost, that has been surrounding every time a teacher implies he might be Autistic, Asperger, or TDAH. He is just a bright boy, who can't be good at everything that 5 years old are suppose to be, because is just a human being. and yes, All you need is love, and for me a lot of courage, a lot of it.

I'm stuck at the end of the vest, I made a few mistakes and now I can't move forward. Those buttons have been with me since the winter of 98 when I went to work to Sun Valley resort, I hope to get back some day, as a guest, to show my kid the snow and to ski.

I loved the last book of the Benedict Society, it took me about 2 days, I just could not put down, and eve drop a tear.

Sometimes I have moments of mental clarity.

I do not want to escape the feeling of the end of the day today.

Calm and certainty.

I want to make the most of the moments of mental clarity that I can find in my day, when I know perfectly well what is the plan and how to follow it.

Why we often lose the direction?

Ever have stayed up all night and then go to watch the sunrise?

That used to gave me this feeling, today it was sing to my little one, the same as when he was a baby cooing, and knowledge, where we're going to and why it is the best way of doing things for us.

I am at peace.

I also red, Maten al leon, by Jorge Ibargüengoitia which is incredibly good as all of his books we also got Harry Potter from the public library, and we are reading it slowly, since I make drawing for each chapter.

More on the garden

I'm a little single-minded lately, sorry, only knit and garden, but that's how it's all for now.
Last night I read Anne of Green Gables total kitsch, but I liked as well read as I folded a mountain of clothes that threatened to devour me.
Not all pumpkin were fertilized, even with the many wasps, but this is beautiful.
There are many bean pods green, purple and green with purple spots.
Corn grows and grows.
Also the first pod of peas and bean sprouts, garbanzo and fava beans are doing well.
The lettuce is a little rickety but at least not die has not been attacked by slugs.

The beer ran against slugs (thanks to all), but I have to repeat it several nights, last night was very tired.

I finished another wool diaper cover today, I hope soon to have them in my other store.

I'm so excited to have had cast the second sock (It's my first pair), I had to wait until last Saturday to get the second skein.

Have you explored your garden at night?

I did it today, and I'm still sick in my stomach, knowing what this could mean. I don't know what to do. I put a salt barrier from the garden, so they will not come into the house, but it would fade with the rain in two or three days. And I can't put salt on the plants because it would burn them. I tried crushed egg shell barriers, that don't seams to work.

Does you have an advice for me?

They were in all sizes, brown and grey, the biggest should be 3 inches.

I will read to try to find a solution, maybe Fukoka or Jhon Jeavons have write on it, o maybe this book I this book I have.

A Pumpkin grew out of the compost pile, and then flowers start to emerge, but then it seams that something was cutting them, and leaving in the grass, without eating them, I was confused.

Until a friend explained to me, male flowers bloom and fall, and female flowers have the fruit.

I had learn this in elementary school, I just didn't remember it.

I'm so excited about growing things for the first time, that I go out to the backyard with my camera every morning.

I had many planned, but haven't been able to publish them.

After this one, I started my first pair of socks, at least following a pattern, Africa's Socks, here are my Ravelry notes, it is a great challenge for me, I didn't understood many word, but I'm happy to say that I finished the first one. The week Istarted I Fukuoka book, The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming (New York Review Books Classics), it's about Natural Farming and so much more, I recommend it a lot.

After that I finshed the diaper cover while reading some mystery stories I enjoyed a lot.

Now I'm making the Plain Vest, I didn't had number 9 needles and used 10, It's so big that I think it fits well my skinny 5 year old, too bad the colors are all girly, so I will have to find another owner.

I'm not reading much this week, I'm more into movies mood.

I changed the blog a little, hope you like it, and no, that's is not a mistake, in Costa Rica winter is the rainy season, from May to December, and then it comes summer (there is only two seasons), and it's funny, because summer it's the non-rainy time of the year.

I have been busy with a new plan of life, that's why I had not post lately.

I finally can for the first time, and succeed.

I'm trying to make an habit of us washing dishes after very meal, he loves it (the pic it's just one of his funny faces).

This that grew out of the compost pile it's going great, I think it's some kind of pumpkin, it has 43 forming flowers, I'm very excited, I think I could exchange the pumpkins for eggs or fruit at the Farmer's Market I work on.

I just wanted to join the Yarn Along of small things blog, since right now I'm reading and knitting, not always, but I'm now.

I love to make diaper covers for babies, and I love the Benedict Society books, this is second one, i reed the first on a year ago and I had to wait a lot to read second, The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey, but now I can't wait to read the third. Besides I'm so excited because they are in Spanish now, so my kid will be able to read them, or me reading to them, is a translation from Spain, which makes a little funny, but still.

It's funny that I chosed the book for the illustrator and not for the author, and still was a great choice. The yarn is from Restless Pairie Farm, great yarn, the most soft ever, and organic at a great price, what else could you ask?

On Sunday, without expecting anything, I showed Itzcóatl how to read music, not exactly notes, but rithmic and which cord, and finger should he use, of course he had the preparation from almost a year at the Beginers Music class for kids and half of the year on Suzuki's violin method, but still I was so proud and happy to see him read it all in the first try, it's so great I can't believe it.

We love natural fruit juices, I don't sweet them with sugar but moderate molasses, but it's very tiring to be making several at day, so I started making concentrates and freezing them, so I can just add water and have different flavors in the week, I love so much to have found this solution.

Here is another post birthday related, sorry, I just love his birthday.

I love to make our own piñatas every year, and how he gets more involved every time. The only I didn't made was for his 4th birthday.

First one was a Sun, so bad I don't have a picture of it finished.

Second one was a king, my sis help me a bit.

Tird one was a dinosaur, and he i wearing the same pajama than 2 years later, that's good clothes.

Forth one was bought but very Mexican.

Fifth, a purple fish.

Mi sister and her boyfriend made him the most amazing cardboard space ship, that eves has lights, all kids loved it and Itzcoatl even has an NASA Kid's Astronaut soft helmet. His outfit was also a gift.

We already played with everything, it's so funny that the rainforest puzzle is larger than him.

I din't took pictures of the pizza that day, but we had leftovers today so here is it.

So the party is over, it's kind of nice and sad at the same time. I'll had to wait a year for another planing and crafting.

I can believe how fast time pass, it seams so close when we were putting together the puzzle from his 4th birthday, and now he's five.

Last year he still was kind of babyish and now it's a little fellow, although I felt the same way every year, amazed and all his changes and afraid that next year he will find my party ideas -and myself- ridiculous.

The party theme was The Sea, and my mom made the most amazing fish cake.

Itzcoatl and me made the Piñata, he chosed the paint color. I was afraid it would be to fragile for the filling weight, but wasn't, actually it was a little difficult to brake.

I was afraid of that there were too much candy on it, but it was fine.

I made some frozen banana-nuts-yogurt lolly pops.
It rained a lot, but was fine.

Kids draw with chalk on the floor, very cool drawings.

Of 5 kids that were invited, only 2 arrived, it was perfectly fine for Itzcóatl. At the beginning I got a little mad about it, because I feel it's disrespectful to confirm assistance and not to arrive, or cancel at the last minute, not in a emergency case, but as an habit. I don't why we have been in this situation often lately. But then, i found the bright side of it, since my house is small, and there were many adults, uncles, grandmas, and even a great grandma, just 68 years old, by the way. And also there was not to many gifts, and nothing plastic but puzzles, and coloring books, it was great, and he was so happy.

I made homemade pizzas from the lovely book Baking Bread With Children (Crafts Series), everybody loved them (most of them, even when a few were not so happy with the absence of meat), I would place the dough and tomato sauce and each family would add whatever they want from the options: zucchini, eggplant, broccoli, olives, capers, champs, bell pepper, and mozzarella cheese.

At the end I presented a shadow puppet play inspired on the Celtic Myth Lljfr Taliesin.

One of the things that made me more happy of it was that we didn't use anything disposable, all food was homemade, and there wasn't almost anything in plastic, just a few balls and magnifying glass for the piñata.

This is a beautiful place to visit. It's in Cartago, Costa Rica, on the road to Paraíso.

It's speciality is orchids, and this is not the best time of the year for them, but the new Japanese Garden donated by their goverment it's so beautiful and peaceful, I recommend it strongly.

I will be making some pictures into postcards for my etsy shop.

I sufer from stomach problems often.

An homepatic-aryuvedic doctor once recommended to make limeonade and add a pinch of salt, because the minerals needed are there, specially in more natural salts, such as sea or this pink Himalayan one, but regular will do.

You have no idea how revitalizing this is, I recommend you try it.

By the way this is the best honey ever.

Preparing for his 5th birthday

You may go and get a cup of coffee or tea before, since this is a looong post.

First let's remember:

Number 1: Babtism and Wrestrling figures (Luchadores) in general, particularly Místico. Number 2: Fruits. Number 3: Cars (hey, no Cars). Number 4: What falls, there was no time to organize. Number 5: The sea (although most was the Egyptians).
I've been out for the race stuck in the preparations for the party.
I'll share.
First invitations, cut out a nice cardstock I bought at an art store imitating the sea and sand, decorated with rubber stamps with shells and marine animals and interior watercolors can be seen in the photo.

The bags are on fabric, and I give them from the begining, so they can play with their favors and use them for what they pick up at the piñata, and after all a little bag can be reused instead of trash.

This is what they carry inside, a espantasuegras, a goat's milk lolly pop , a cooki covered in chocolate, a chocolate bunny, a sea board game rolled (drawn by me), a small cloth bag with dice and four wooden tiles (painted by me), a bottle of bubbles, one of the following options: spinner top, yoyo or bowling (wood and painted by me, all), and maybe a pirate's patch.

We made the piñata on Monday, I hope it will dry on time, we kind of made in a rush, so it's not perfect, the surfice it's all bumpy, but, hey, it's to be broken, right?

I usually don't decorate a lot, so I just sew 3 fabrics togheter to hang in the wall and add some fish and shells.

I'm making fabric napkins for the ocasion, I have made on 2, but I'll get there.

Today I bought peanuts, which completes the filling of the piñata.

I still have t to make tomato sauce for pizzas and the concentrated water of Jamaica (Hibiscus flower), in addition to granola for Saturday's Farmer's Market.

I also have to design and practice for the Play, a shadow puppets one I will be making for the day, because I have no progress on that, I think it'll make the siren story by Maria Elena Walsh, if you do not know their stories and songs I highly recommend they do, they are excellent.

Also thought about making a list of songs to play from my mp3 with sound waves and songs about the sea including Hermanos Rincón, María Elena Walsh and eve Lost Acapulco.

Camping inside

Yesterday my son asked that we play camping.

It was really fun, we got everything needed in our back pack, build the tent, made fire, ate marshmallow and reed suspense stories.

After sleeping we went to the river to fish, swim and canopy.

We used this site to get in the mood.

Learning to ride a bike

Perhaps you, like me, had seen the bicycles for young children that do not have pedals, they are very nice but expensive.

But there are other options, the other day I got the idea from Rachel's blog, there is always an economical solution. We have this bike that was my sisters, who are already girls.

The issue is that it is better to teach a bike ride that has no pedals or little whells, because the ability to balance can develop from the beginning, and avoid the insecurity that comes when the little wheels are removed.

Today, on a Sunday afternoon without rain, we tried it, I remove the pedals but not the chain I had not the right tools for that, so I just taped to the bike..

In just one day I saw progress, and my son (almost 5) was happy and confident.

As you may have noticed I haveabsent, since I returned from Mexico I have been very busy, thankfully.

With Earth day, there were several exhibitions in different places, I'm also in stage 3 (or 4?) on the arrangement of my home to finally feel at ease.

Still I always need to create and read.

The basket of books I brought from Mexico, I can't put down Tinísima Elena Poniatowska, it's great, there is an English version Tinisima, I identify very much with the love of our country, and also I liked to learn about the social struggles of the early twentieth century.

I'm making baby booties to sell, the pattern of Needle Craft Patterns, worth buying, I think, offers 4 sizes, it is well explained and is super easy. It also allows to sell items created long as they are personal and not industrial.

In my nights of work I have ended more than once with a second dinner that fascinated me, bagel with tuna in oil with peppers and capers (plus mayonnaise, mustard and tomato).

I hope all the internet friends are doing well. Here, torrential rains have began for the season.

Last Friday my beautiful little Itzcoatl had his first violin recital.

I'm up to the sky inflated with pride, as you can imgine, so clever, so handsome, with his fancy clothing, he really liked one of the students performance who played the Concerto in C Major Op 41 Borisovich Kabalevsky Dmitri (I movement). I loved the interpretation of the Concerto in E major for violin (I movement Allegro) Bach.

It was a wonderful moment, I keep it in my heart forever.

Son, I'm very proud of you, you are wonderful.

The other day it became obvius that my son need a replacement for his lunch bag, which I made 2 years ago.

So I did a new one, with a lot of laminated scraps, which makes it easy to clean, and I made him a new place mat and napking.

The other I found this tutorial via Wee Gallery blog (have you seen her beautiful baby cards and wall decals?) and I have been eager to make it for a few days.

My son is starting to read, but still I ear him something like: a-i-Idon'tknowwhat-Idon'tknowwhat-o-Idon'tknowwhat-Idon'tknowwhat, and I really think this will help and even more because he's in them.

Today we went for our food to the farmer's market (and super market) and I got some unusual foods for this, such as kiwi, yuca, and ñoquis (I don't know the name for this in English, they are a potato pasta balls).

The main critera for the choosing of things was that there will be familiar thing for him, so when I got to W I was in trouble, this letter is particular of anglo language, so we don't really have Spanish words with it, so I was between Wagner, Whisky and Wall-e, and as much as I dislike that last one It was the one he knew, so oh well.

Knitting

I have been knitting a lot these days.

Most of it to sell, at the farmer's market I work on Saturdays or in my Etsy shop. There is some leg warmer for myself, some for baby, and also baby socks.

I have been wanting to make some knitting project bags, and I finally did with this cute fabric, but they are too small, for projects with double point needles it's necessary that they will fir horizontally or they will be coming out of the stitches all the time, well, live and learn.

Knitting togheter

I learn to knit when I was a kid, but it wasn't until I become a mom that it turns in such a great interest and delight.

In the trip some friends have join and I have teach them what I know and we have enjoy coffee-tea afternoons knitting.

I have learn a lot from the internet, from blogs, Ravelry (of course), and Molly's Sketchbook from Purl Bee. I know more knitting termilogy in English than in Spanish, and I have notice that there is lees information in our language.

So in an effort to encourage new knitters who don't read in English I founded a little knitting group called Tejiendo Juntos, Knitting toghether.
*In Spanish we use the same word for knitting and crocheting.

I ask which project they wanted to start with, and a wool diaper cover was chosen (maybe some of my readers are moms? haha), so we followed the Ottobre pattern

So it's very informal, I'm a begginer and left handed, but we are having fun.

Costa Rican Seasons

In this part of the world the seasons are very different from the north hemisphere ones.

Mainly we have rainy and not rainy. The first will called Summer and goes from December to May, and the second it's Winter, from May to December. It rains a lot, it may start at 11am, or at 8am, like today and it won't stop completely during the whole day.

It's a little bit difficult to live it, but all that water it's what gives this country lots of flora, fauna and helps in producing lots of food, and also there is enough water for every one all year.

Usually rain will start after the Easter's full moon, it was delay a couple of weeks this years, but today is definitely here.

Art exhibition

Itzcóatl attends an art class, its beautiful and enriches him, he loves it, they have a snack in the middle of the class that he loves particulary.

Each week they produce some artwork, each has its history, and I love all of them and treasure them, but sometimes I have no where or how exhibit or at least keep them, especially those that are sculptural.

I finally found a solution for them, exposing the hinge of the exterior window, even when they are outside of the house, no one will take them, and is a pleasure watching them since we arrived and as we enter our home, it's like a welcome.

El Corazón y el Puñal

I looked for it in the usual places,
were it goes for rest,
were it goes for fun,
even were it tends to hide.

Nothing.

It took me a while to find out
that I had lost it.

At the same time
it's bigger than ever,
now that it knew unconditionally.

I'm still not sure if I lose it or missed it.
Maybe it was too heavy.
too damaged.
too sore.

The worst part is wanting to get it back,
and at the same time doubt it,
because it hurts just to think of putting it back were it belongs.

So I'll stay, very quiet, and wait, and hope,
very hard,
that nothing changes.

I've been struggling with the house almost since we arrived, longing for the first few days at my father´s house (when we first arrive to Costa Rica) or in this house, or the last in Mexico, with very few things.

Many who we are in the journey of parenting with awareness of our environmental impact, are in this search-path of having less, in relation to this I tell you that I am participating in a reading group of Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids, hosted by Rachel on Clean. blog, you can participate even without reading the book.

Today I wanted to photograph our breakfast, I have speak before about this, I said that taking pictures of your breakfast has to be a sign of happiness and well being.
Seeing the picture I noticed something that I like, it's that at least I'm not ashamed to background, as it has been for a long time, something that keept me from inviting people over my room still needs a lot of work, besides the missing mop (my least favorite activity in the world), but the feeling of well being is indomitable, I can finally breathe.

I finished last night around 4 am, I also found the battery charger that allows me to get my camera to photograph my world (and finally make the final video on the Ottobre wool diaper cover tutorial series I'm hosting at the Spanish version of the blog).
I also did an activity that had promised to Itzcóatl for days, the Easter egg hunt, something he had never done (and had no much idea of), I liked to draw the map, but would I didn't want to give a very high dose of sugar, so I just hid 5 candy eggs and included a little tin egg I had bought some time ago but had not given him (it's this one Fried Egg - by HABA).

I'm enjoying Easter at home and I hope to get to work on the garden beds that I have not prepared, What about you?

I was not sure if this was going to make it. but it did and I'm so happy.

It's a small order from Horizon Herbs, which I found via farmmama (my new favorite blog), I found very interesting that they would have a special kit of seed for dyeing plants.

I plant them last night, and I'm super excited. I got some blue corn, which I used to eat when living in Mexico, purple onion, Epazote, which is great to get rid of parasites and also for good taste on beans; some medicinal as flax seed, yarrow and comfrey, and some that may not be in their best environment, but maybe will grow, as asparagus and tea tree.

I also start a mini quilt for a nephew baby who's shower is in two weeks.

Quick recipe with garbanzo or chick peas

It's not a great photo but I highly recommend it, ti's yummy, nutritive, fast and cheap.

Just cook them and mix them with chopped tomato, lime juice and salt.

I have not sleep enough because I have to finish some bolsters for yoga, I should have done it earlier, but this is the kind of work I don't enjoy much, to repeat and repeat like a sushi robot.

Anyway, I didn't have much on the house to make lunch today. Mu mom gave me her juice extractor so I had some carrot pulp and I wanted to use it. So I mix it with eggs little potatoes, zuchini, grated cheese, rosemary, oregano and salt in a oven glass container.
In a pan I cook a little some chopped onion, garlic and peppers on olive oil and add that too.

And the the I cook it in the oven for 20-30 minutes, it end up very well.

And, since I already had the oven hot I made some brownies with almond pulp left form the other day's milk.

It was delicious.

It's been very hot and sunny around here these days, so I look like I went to the beach.

I continue to work also on the Art Wall on which all the order of my living room depends, but it's a long project.

Collecting seeds from what you eat

The other I was ask on my technique to collect the seed of what we eat to grow them later.

It's almost embarrassing to share it, because it's quite simple, I just wash them and let them to dry in a plate.

I collect almos everything, I thing that we may find a use for them even when we were not able to grow them.

And sometimes I just plant the fresh pulp and it works.

The Librería Internacional de Tibás, from outside it does not look particulary interesting. But inside it has a coffe shop and a pretty garden, so I thought it would be a good place for mamas with infants to hang.

They also have beautiful puzzles, such as this one.

Most of the seeds from have germinated already, so it time to make the beds.

And water them for 3 hours. Birds may get interested.

A new place

Yesterday I was able to get a new bookshelf, which help a lot to organize the books that were all piled in the other two. The living room looks much better although there is still books on boxes.

I trade this beautiful Indian recycled plastic rug, and I'm so happy.

We are slowly moving to get a pretty and peaceful home, for now Itzcóatl nejoy to see his books, read them to himself (by memory) or imagine with them. I hope to find balance in the whole house soon, to be comfortable.

He even found a moment to write on his new place.

Sometimes I see a fabric and I think, this is so perfect for..., and this is what happened with this great Acrobats fabric.

It's just a simple messenger bag for an ex-teacher from high school who end up being the parthner of one of my closest friends.

The other day we were going to a birthday party for a 5 year old to be girl, friend of Itzcóatl. I always try to give soething handmade but this time I wanted to include my son, so I asked what he would like to do, and after decide we were making a puppet he choose a Jaguar, so I cut the fabric and we made the dots painting on it whit our fingers, then I sew it, made a little purse, write a postcard (from boygirlparty) and we were done. She liked, but her baby sister liked even better, and she kept it on her hand even while nursing, it was really cute.
